Matt's Buzzers

Matt was a dedicated and accomplished Quiz Bowler throughout his college career. As an undergraduate at Iowa State, he participated in tournaments throughout the country. He had just completed his first semester of graduate study at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he had continued to be active in Quiz Bowl, when he suddenly came down with acute pancreatitis. He died on January 2nd, 2005.

We began our buzzer grant program in 2005, hoping to continue Matt's love for Quiz Bowl and help make it possible for Middle and High School students to participate with all of the requisite equipment. We've been fortunate to receive donations from several other individuals and organizations which has allowed us to award some additional buzzer grants. Thank you all so much.
If you would like to be considered for a Matt's Buzzers Grant in December 2015, please complete and submit the application found on our 'Application' page.  If you're having problems submitting the application through our website, please feel free to email your school's, team's and coach's information to
We would also love to hear a little bit about your school and your team. Thank you so much!  Our grants will again be $250 per team and we plan to select 10 teams to receive grants.  Our 2015/2016 selections will be made on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

Updated stats regarding Matt's Buzzers from 2005 through 2014:
Applications received = 648 from from 43 US states
Grants awarded = 118 from 30 states
Most of the applications we receive are from the middle of the country with Illinois (80), Ohio (60), Kentucky (50) and Indiana (34) among the top 5.  Not surprisingly, the other state in the top 5 for applications is Oklahoma (72), which has a very strong Quiz Bowl organization.  When we look at the next 6 we can add California (32), Arkansas (26), Kansas (25), Pennsylvania (23), Michigan (22) and Missouri (21).  It's been wonderful to see Quiz Bowl spreading across the US as we begin to receive applications from Eastern & Western states such as Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming and Montana.  We've been particularly impressed with Arizona (12), Tennessee (10) and West Virginia (9) who have sent in quite a few applications over the past 2 years.  Also, over the past couple of years we have received a large number of applications from schools who are new to Academic their 1st or 2nd year. This is a wonderful indication that our students are interested in more than just the typical sports programs.  It's also a nod to the wonderful coaches we hear from with each application.  If it wasn't for the coaches and academic advisors, our students wouldn't have this wonderful opportunity.  Keep on growing!
